SECRETARY’S MINUTES
 
Acting Secretary Hedy Marín-Mänzke’s minutes were read.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
Chairman Gilda Chirafisi reported the passing of Chloe Angela De Leon, the Gift of Life child from the Phillipines,
Chairman Gilda read the letter sent by her parents.
 
The board has approved the ten (10) surgeries in Iraq plus an additional two (2).

Chairman Gilda Chirafisi stated that the Mater Hospital proposal sent by John Makau was not legible
and is
waiting for more information, Chairman Gilda also stated that the monies for this proposal, if accepted,
must be sent through the Gift of Life or the hospital where surgery will be performed. 
 
Luis Del Rosario asked about the monies for Uganda...after much discussion a motion was made to approve
 the
monies.

Richard Esposito asked about the children in this country that are born with heart defects...Bill Currie explained
that when a child is born with a heart defect in this country, it is most likely to be corrected at birth or soon
thereafter...Luis Del Rosario printed the Gift of Life by-laws for review and he has been asked to appoint
a committee to review them.

VICE CHAIRMAN REPORT
 
Vice Chair Bill Currie has been working with Gift of Life International in Memphis, TN.  He will travel to the hospital
‘Lorian’ where surgery will be performed and also where surgery for St. Jude’s Children's Hospital is done. 
It is sponsored by Memphis East Rotary Club which has 150 members...Vice Chair Bill reported the Gift
of
Life in Egypt is moving ahead...Vice Chair Bill stated that HBO may be doing a program about Gift of Life.

TREASURER’S REPORT
 
Deborah Cooke stated that there is $26,000.00 in the account and is waiting on only one check from the Gift of Life Gala....Excellent!!

Dan Nalven introduced Kay Ghachem, from Iowa, who has been involved with Gift of Life and other projects in
the Middle East...Dan Nalven reported that Kuwait has approved surgery for children and he has received an
email from a Public Health officer in Kuwait about this medical mission that Gift of Life will sponsor...Luis
Del
Rosario asked who will be incurring costs and if Gift of Life 7230 is involved....

...Kay Ghachem added that doctors from here will go on a medical mission and will have all expenses
paid by the Kuwait government including room and board...Luis Del Rosario asked that a formal letter
from the Kuwait government be sent to Chairman Gilda concerning all that was discussed...the
committee thanked Kay
Ghachem for bringing this information to us...a motion was
made by Howard Penn asking for parameters be
made of this proposal from Kuwait...Luis
Del Rosario stated that the executive board can act on it.

Dan Nalven continued...that as a result of his trip to Africa, the Wheelchair Foundation has
sent 10 wheelchairs
o Africa... and because of his efforts, Essex Junction Rotary in Vermont
gave $500 towards this project...Dan
Nalven also received an email from Grace Aguaro,
greetings and thanks for his and Barbara Nalven’s efforts in
Uganda... Dan Nalven passed
around more photos of kids in Africa.


ASSISTANT VICE CHAIRMAN REPORT

Asst. Vice Chair Stephanie Phillips reported that, for next year’s gala on February 9th, she has contacted Tarrytown House which can accommodate 300 and also overnight stays.  Luis Del Rosario stated that the Sheraton in Mahwah, NJ can accommodate 600 and will get follow-up info for Asst. Vice Chair Stephanie.


NEW BUSINESS

Jim Romeo spoke of the Bronx Rotary’s Presidents Dinner on June 26th...they will be honoring Gift of Life Dr. Sett from
Westchester Medical and Megan Charlop who has been a host for 3 of the Gift of Life chil-
dren...everyone is
welcome... Dr. Sam Weinstein who is from Montefiore will be honored at another time for he will be on a medical
mission on that day...Chairman Gilda added that we should honor both Dr. Samuel
Weinstein of Montefiore and
Dr. Sett of Westchester Medical at our next gala and their medical teams....Luis Del Rosario would like
an event that honors host families and Dan Nalven added that it  would be a great
idea...Bob Cucinell added
that it would be an opportunity to increase Rotary membership...

Arnold Streisfeld asked in anyone was interested in the 3rd Annual ‘Go the Distance’ event on Sunday, May 6, 2007. 
It will be a ‘Walk and Carnival Family Fun Day’ at Westchester Medical Center.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

     Chairman Gilda Chirafisi reported...Fify’s arrival, surgery at Montefiore Hospital and prayers for him. Fify is

     now home and he sent a wonderful thank you card...Lou the 41/2 yr. old from Nassau, aka “King Louie”,

     recovered quickly, 2 days after surgery he was moving about at Montefiore Hospital...Amela Zadega, the child

     from Albania will have surgery April 4th at Westchester Medical Center...Denica Denis from St. Lucia also

     had surgery, at Westchester Medical Center and is now home well. Kevin Quick, a non-Rotarian from Rye,

     contributed $7,000, and has given a contribution annually to the Gift of Life, Kevin's child had a heart problem

     and knows first hand what it means to save a child's life. Kevin's firm formerly Phillip Morris now Altria,

     contributes a matching amount to the Gift of Life Chairman Gilda read a letter from the Philippines, thanking

     Gift of Life, for Chloe Angela De Leon who had surgery March 16th... Chairman Gilda also read a letter

     from “Surgeons of Hope” who are in dire need of a little support for surgery in Dakar, Egypt. Dan Nalven

     added that we have supported them in the past and made a motion to accept.

Chairman Gilda Chirafisi proceeded with the Gift of Life event slated for 2009, which celebrates its15th year

anniversary. Luis Del Rosario was asked to assist as co-chair to PDG David Sullivan, who is chair.

Georgene Mongarella would like to be part of the entertainment committee. Luis Del Rosario who gladly

accepted to co-chair, has discussed the event and added that “The event targets to have 500 attendees although

the accommodations sit 800. A two hour cocktail ‘hour’ with music and a live performance is also considered.”

Howard Penn suggested calling it “An Affair of the Heart”, for it takes place on Saturday, February 14th, 2009.

Hedy Marín-Mänzke suggested a cabaret group that perform at another event she has attended and will inquire.

Chairman Gilda Chirafisi announced that the April 26th meeting will discuss nominations/elections.

The nominating committee members are George Camp and Georgene Mongarella.

CHAIRMAN EMERITUS REPORT

         Dan Nalven reported that a plaque was given to Tom Johnson, president of the Ossining Rotary Club for their

donation of $5,000 for an incoming child. Dan passed around photos of Nalwzze, a 3 yr. old., Allen Nambuya, a 17 yr.

old and Jonathan Ozama, an 11 yr. old, who have had heart surgery. They are from East Africa where Dan and

Barbara have visited. Dan and Barbara have a film of their trip to Africa, and offer it to the Rotary clubs to show what

the Gift of Life does globally.

VICE CHAIRMAN REPORT

      Bill Currie spoke of the Iraqi child and of other “Heart” programs in the Dominican Republic that have raised

      $750,000. He spoke of the Iraqi proposal to help 200 children, and the media's covering of the Iraqi child

      sponsored by a service man who was later killed and that not once was it mentioned that it was Rotary Gift of

      Life only that the name Gift of Life was mentioned. Luis Del Rosario added that the media does not mention

      Rotary and/or Gift of Life. Tom Minozzi stated that we should educate the media about what Rotary does.

OLD BUSINESS

      Georgene Mongarella announced the event of the White Plains RC, “An Evening in Tuscany” at the

        Westchester Hills Golf Club on Thursday, May 3, 2007 and distributed invites.

      • Chairman Gilda Chirafisi showed pictures of Nairobi children in support of District 7230 Gift of Life.

 Report of the Gift of Life Dinner -

      Ellen Fentas, Journal Chair stated that Marguerite Chadwick-Juner was excellent in the reviewing, creating

        and submitting of proofs for the journal.

      • Georgene Mongarella, Silent Auction Chair, reported that $4,400 was raised.

      • Stephanie Phillips stated that a closer check as to who attends the event, because of no payment at door, needs

        to be addressed. It was suggested that issuing dinner tickets will help control - Chairman Gilda Chirafisi

        stated that it will be addressed at next meeting.

NEW BUSINESS

     Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center will host their 3rd Annual ‘Go the

       Distance’ event on Sunday, May 6, 2007. It will be a ‘Walk and Carnival Family Fun Day’. Howard Penn

       presented a $5,000 check to sponsor a child of the Gift of Life, from the Ossining Rotary Club. He also

       presented Chairman Gilda Chirafisi with a long sleeve t-shirt of that event and she gladly modeled it on her

       shoulders!

     • Luis Del Rosario is hosting a evening at his home on March 23rd, this “Beloved” event will be emailed

       with an update and directions. He stated that Rotary District 7250 will donate $40,000 to the Philippines Gift

       of Life.

     • Dan & Barbara Nalven will be moving in May to Sarasota, Florida and will continue their ‘selfless giving’

       assisting Sarasota’s Gift of Life. Sarasota’s Gift of Life’s gain is our great loss.
